Our Christmas tree had an early and inglorious demise. I was checking our screen door before heading out to the gym when I noticed about 4 bugs crawling on the wall. Then we realized our tree was covered with hundreds of these little bugs. There was a little bug on just about every needle and they were climbing off the tree onto the wall at an alarming rate.
We guessed they were praying mantis babies that just hatched. We must have had a nest in our tree. Fearful of a full fledged mantis infestation, we immediately jerked the tree out the screen door onto the porch. Ryan began un-decorating the tree from the porch while I kept squishing bugs that had gotten off the tree and were crawling in the house. Its a good thing I'm not the type of girl that screams when I see a bug.
Here's one of our intruders crawling on the blinds. The picture is a bit blurry because these little guys are fast and let's be honest: my camera's macro setting isn't that impressive.
I carefully inspected each ornament and squashed a few bugs crawling on them and put them away. Ryan managed to save the lights but as a result got himself coated in bugs. We decided to let the tinsel go. What a weird way to end the season! I'm just glad it was a praying mantis nest as opposed to a spider's nest. I might be converted to artificial trees. Ryan insists he will just treat future trees with some indoor raid before we bring it in to decorate. I guess we'll see who reigns supreme in the battle of real v.s. artificial next year. :)
