A Trip to the ER

Here is our recovering little Ava.
Last night we had a trip to Children's Mercy Emergency Room.
We came home from some Christmas caroling and Ava threw up all her dinner. Which was a little odd. She hadn't been acting sick and had no fever. But she couldn't keep even a few sips of apple juice down. She threw up for a few hours. And then it turned into dry heaving. Poor thing. And then she started to throw up bile and a little blood. We got concerned this point and headed for the emergency room.

The one nice thing about going to the ER at 1:30 am is that it is empty and you don't have to wait. Anyway, the pediatrician thought that Ava could have a bowel obstruction and wanted to take some x-rays. If she did have an obstruction they wanted to transfer us to another hospital for urgent surgery. Thankfully, the x-ray was normal except for some constipation. {I guess Ava will have to give up her cheese addiction}. The Dr. thought that the blood was from small tears in her esophagus from throwing up so hard.

But because she was getting pretty dehydrated and still couldn't keep food down, she was given some Zofran and then a few sips of pediatric solution through a syringe every 5 minutes. After she was able to keep that down and got hydrated again we were able to bring her home. She did throw up the mucus lining in her stomach, so now she is on a special medication to protect her stomach while the mucus lining comes back.

So today we've been hanging about in our pjs, just taking it easy and trying to catch up on sleep from our all nighter at the hospital. All in all, we are just grateful she didn't need surgery and is recovering nicely.
